Baby Bonnet to Wedding Hanky (Love is Blind)

October 23, 2024 By Tricia Leave a Comment

I was watching the Love is Blind wedding episode today (don’t judge) and one of the moms pulled out for her daughter a special memento that I instantly recognized!

I won’t say who until later in the post so as not to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, but on the wedding day, Mom pulled out a baby bonnet and a poem to read to Daughter. It was the exact same poem my mom read at my rehearsal dinner! She, too, had received the special baby bonnet and poem right after I was born and saved it for my wedding day.

I will never forget the love that my mom put into it–not only turning the bonnet into the handkerchief but also ironing it to be perfect. I mean, who even irons anymore? And the fact that she managed to keep that thing for 24 years, moving from house to house and state to state? It was so touching.

Here’s the poem in case you didn’t hear it (there are some variations):

  • I’m a lacy hankie, As pretty as can be.
With a bit of stitching, A bonnet has been made out of me.
To be worn home from the hospital – Or perhaps on my Christening Day.
Please cherish and pack me away.
  • Then on her wedding day, A few stitches snipped
And a wedding hankie I’ll be.
And if by chance it is a boy, Someday he will wed and to his bride
He can present this hankie, Once worn upon his little Irish head.

I thought that these had totally gone out of style and weren’t a “thing” anymore, but apparently they are because you can buy them multiple places online. Need something quick? Check out the selection at Amazon. Want something handmade and a little more special? Check out the selection on Etsy. The prices vary on both, but you can get them as low as around $10. What a special gift for that price!

This handkerchief was one of the most special mementos that I have from my wedding. And I am hopeful that my daughters will want to carry mine as their “something borrowed” on their wedding days!

(Now for the spoiler…. this was the handkerchief that Taylor’s mom on Love Is Blind gave to her!)
