Avatar and the Happy Meal: Not a Good Match

January 4, 2010 By Leave a Comment

I have been reading with interest all of the reviews about Avatar. Not only is it hugely hyped, but my kids want to see it because they saw it advertised on their McDonald’s Happy Meal. Not only was Avatar all over the box, but the little toy in the box was a character from Avatar.

At first I was confused because I thought that Avatar wasn’t for kids. I figured that if McDonald’s was advertising it all over the Happy Meals, it must be something meant for kids to see. After all, aren’t the Happy Meals meant for kids?

It turns out that I was right to begin with. Avatar is, indeed, rated PG-13. And Happy Meals are meant for kids under 13. Something just doesn’t seem right about that.

I can sort of understand that argument that movie companies make when the advertise on Nickelodeon a movie that is PG-13 or above. After all, my husband likes to watch Nickelodeon. While some kids under 13 are seeing the ads, a lot of kids over 13 and adults are seeing them as well.

But Happy Meals? I don’t like it. Give my kid a toy for a movie that she isn’t old enough to see? And plaster the box that she sits and reads while she is eating with ads for your movie? I think we might just stick with eating at Chick-fil-A where I don’t have to worry.
