Groundhog Day was originally a German tradition, later carried on in Pennsylvania. The first official Groundhog Day was celebrated on February 2, 1886 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania in the newspaper. The faithful began gathering in Gobbler’s Knob the next year for the annual prognostication by Punxsutawney Phil.
