Manchurian Candidate (starring Denzel Washington,
Meryl Streep, and Liev Schreiber)
Having never seen the 1962 original, I didn't know
what to expect with this movie. I tend to like Denzel
Washington, especially when he is playing a "good guy"
character. The movie seemed to have received lukewarm
reviews, but I assumed that was because so many people
had seen the original.
This is definitely not a movie that you want your
kids in the room to see. There were some disturbing
images as well as violence. However, it was not enough
to turn off someone like me--not a big action fan.
The plot revolves centers around a senator, played by
Streep, who will stop at no cost to see her son in the
White House. The son, played by Schreiber, is a
decorated war hero. Washington plays a paranoid (and
possibly delusional) man who served with Schreiber.
As the plot unfolds, we see some twists and turns
regarding the circumstances under which Schreiber's
character received his war honors. Washington is
relentless in his pursuit for the truth.
The end of the movie left my husband and I a little
puzzled about a few things, but not in a "Vanilla Sky"
kind of way. More of a "we should have paid closer
attention toward the end of the movie" kind of way. I'd
see it again. If you are a fan of Washington and/or
Streep and like a little suspense, Manchurian Candidate worth renting.
