Pooh's Heffalump Movie
(Disney, Directed by Frank Nissen)
At 1 hour and 8 minutes, Pooh's Heffalump Movie was a great
excursion for my family, which consists of mom, dad, a 4-year-old
daughter, and a 2-year-old daughter.
Unlike most of the animated movies we have seen recently (Shrek,
Shark Tale, etc.), this one didn't seem geared toward adults. Although
there was a good storyline about discrimination, fear of the unknown,
and acceptance of others, the movie was not filled with "adult" inside
jokes. It was pure classic Disney--beautiful songs by Carly Simon,
traditional cartoon drawing, and characters everyone loves.
The story revolves around a quest by the Pooh characters (Winnie the
Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Tigger, Eeyore, and Roo) to find the Heffalump
that has been intruding on the 100 Acre Woods. The characters all learn
a good lesson about friendship and acceptance of people who are
different. For the first time ever, we see that the Heffalumps are real
rather than imaginary characters from Pooh's dreams. But they are not
what we have come to expect! Roo befriends Lumpy, a baby Heffalump, and
teaches all of the Pooh characters how to be a good friend.
Particularly touching was a scene between Kanga and Roo in which Roo
wants to grow up too quickly and Kanga deals with the struggle that all
moms do--seeing her baby grow up before her eyes. It was a very touching
moment that left me a little weepy!
Pooh's Heffalump Movie was the kind of Disney movie that you expect
to see on video rather than at the theatre. But it was a nice family
evening out without having to worry about bad words or inappropriate
music. An added bonus was that because everyone in the theatre had small
children, we didn't have to worry about the girls singing along a little
or clapping at the good parts!
