Goodnight, My Angel: A Lullaby
by Billy Joel, Yvonne Gilbert (Illustrator)
I'll be the first to admit that I am one of the biggest Billy Joel
fans on the planet. But I don't think that makes me biased in loving
this book. After all, my four-year-old isn't as big a fan as I am
(yet!), and it is the book she now requests every night before she goes
to bed.
The book is taken from the song of the same name and illustrated
beautifully by Gilbert. The pictures consist mainly of a father and his
young daughter, similar to the underlying notion that Joel wrote the
song for his daughter, Alexa.
The book came out before Christmas, and I bought copies for both of
my girls! When I really listen to the words as I read them to them, they
actually bring tears to my eyes. The story itself conveys the love that
parents have for their children and the hope for their futures. The
words toward the end always get me "Someday your child may cry/And if
you sing this lullaby/Then in your heart/There will always be a part of
me."
Hear a
midi of the song and read the words here
if you don't believe me. "Goodnight, My Angel" would make a fantastic gift to a child in your family or even
an expecting parent. If your kids are like mine, they'll be "reading" it
to you after listening to the song a few times. And if that doesn't
touch your heart, I don't know what will!
