The Meyer Family Review of Netflix

 Try Netflix for Free!

They were the best of movies, they were the worst of movies. But we didn't care....because we could watch as many as we wanted for one price!

My family signed up for Netflix as part of one of the introductory deals. We had tried it a few years ago before we had kids but just didn't watch enough new movies to make it worth the money. Times have definitely changed.

Netflix allows you to keep 3 movies at a time. Unlike Blockbuster, there are no game rentals. You visit the Netflix website and queue up the movies that you want in the order that you want them. As you send movies back, new movies are automatically sent out. Essentially, you can rent an unlimited number of movies a month if you keep returning them as soon as you watch them.

Various functions of the website help you to 1) remember what you have already rented, 2) create separate queues for different family members, and 3) rate movies. When you use the Netflix movie rating system, Netflix will recommend similar movies to you and link you directly to those movies. It is very handy for finding movies that you may not even know exist.

In any given month, we typically rent between 5 and 10 movies. At $2-3 a piece, this is a $10-30 a month value, definitely within the price range that we pay for the unlimited service. In particular, it is nice to queue up movies before they are even released so that we can get new releases.

While Blockbuster can be preferable if you want game rentals, Netflix can be preferable if you live close to a distribution system. For example, we live in Indianapolis, a local distribution center. Thus, the turnaround time on our movies is no more than 3 days.

If you are interested in Netflix but are not sure if you would watch enough movies in a month or receive them fast enough to watch as many as you like in a weekend, you can always try it free or at a reduced price for a month. They often run promotions that make giving Netflix a try!
