Earth Day 2008

Earth Day is April 22

It's almost Earth Day. How much do you know about the origins of Earth Day and what you can do to celebrate it?

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.  ~Native American Proverb

Earth Day History

The concept of Earth Day began in 1962 when Senator Gaylord Nelson convinced President Kennedy to do a national conservation tour. In September 1969, Nelson announced that he was planning a national grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment for the spring of 1970. As a result of the strictly grassroots campaign, over 20 million people participated in the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970. That makes Earth Day 2005 the 35th anniversary!

In 1995, President Clinton awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Gaylord Nelson as the Father of Earth Day.

Kids Celebrate Earth Day

Looking for ideas to help your family celebrate Earth Day 2007?

Recycle.

Recycling is one of the easiest ways to teach your children to celebrate Earth Day. Help your children collect aluminum, paper, or plastic to turn in at your local recycling center.

Reuse.

Show your children how to turn paper bags into wrapping paper or baby food jars into paint cups, jewelry holders, or waterglobes.

Reduce.

Teach your children about ways to conserve such as turning off the water while they brush their teeth. Purchase energy or water reduction items with them such as reduced flow shower heads and allow them to help you install them.

Plant a Tree.

Find information from the National Arbor Day Foundation on how to plant trees with your children in honor of Earth Day.

Pennies for the Planet.

Get information from the World Wildlife Foundation on how teachers can conduct a Pennies for the Planett campaign with their classes.
