| It's almost Earth Day. How much do you know about the origins of
Earth Day and what you can do to celebrate it?
We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our

Earth Day History
The concept of Earth Day began in 1962 when Senator Gaylord Nelson
convinced President Kennedy to do a national conservation tour. In
September 1969, Nelson announced that he was planning a national
grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment for the spring of
1970. As a result of the strictly grassroots campaign, over 20 million
people participated in the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970. That makes
Earth Day 2005 the 35th anniversary!
In 1995, President Clinton awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom
to Gaylord Nelson as the Father of Earth Day.
